What is WWDC and why is it trending on Twitter? #WWDC22
Why are the world’s eyes set upon Apple? Know The Fact brings you the whole story of this event.
The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, often simply known as the WWDC or sometimes called the “Dub Dub,” is an information technology conference annually held by Apple Inc. The WWDC is often held at the San Jose Convention Center in California. The event usually showcases new hardware. Though the WWDC doesn’t always showcase hardware, new software and
technologies like those in the macOS, iOS, iPad OS, watchOS, and tvOS families as well as other Apple software are officially announced to the public. In any case, WWDC is strategically important for Apple. The WWDC is an important event as it also hosts third-party software developers that work on apps for Apple’s iPhones, iPods, Macs, and other devices. A good deal of
Apple’s financial performance is dependent upon these third-party software developers.
Attendees at the WWDC can usually participate in hands-on labs with Apple engineers and attend in-depth sessions covering a wide range of topics. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, WWDC 2020 and WWDC 2021 were hosted as online-only events. Once again in 2022, the WWDC will be held online. WWDC 2022 is scheduled to start on Monday, June 6 and end on
Friday, June 10.

Expectations at the event
At WWDC, Apple is expected to unveil a variety of software updates and even some hardware by the Cupertino-based tech giant. Apple is expected to release new Mac hardware as well as a redesigned MacBook Air, among other things. It is speculated that Apple might reveal the successor to the M1 processor at WWDC22. Apple earlier, at a product release event, teased a high-end model called the Mac Pro with an Apple-designed chip. According to Bloomberg, the “M2,” as it would most likely be called, would be the next-generation Mac processor and could come in a redesigned MacBook Air.
It has been reported that the WWDC may witness the launch of the iOS16 along with a variety of enhancements for Apple’s operating system. It is a well-known fact that the iPhone has the most users and is by far Apple’s most important App Store. The updates for Apple’s other software platforms, including iPad, Watch, and TV, are said to get just as much attention at WWDC22. Along with new software updates, it is speculated that the iPadOS 16 might come with improvements such as multi-tasking capabilities, the watchOS 9 might get enhanced navigation features, and macOS 13 and tvOS 16 might experience redesigned applications.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his newsletter, states that he is expecting some “fairly significant” updates this time. Apple is reportedly also planning on presenting an updated lock screen. This lock screen will have wallpapers that display information. This is said to be in line with Apple’s plan for the iPhone 13, which was scheduled to feature an always-on display. According to Gurman, iPadOS 16 will come with a range of upgrades with regard to multitasking. He further states that tvOS is likely to get
even more features. Gurman has also stated in his newsletters that WWDC 2022 will oversee the launching of the OS, the iPadOS 16, the iOS 16, the watchOS 9, and the macOS 13.
Rumours have been going around for a while that Apple is working on an Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality headset. It seems quite unlikely to hear about the announcement of that hardware. It has been speculated that something on the software side might be presented. There could be a teaser announcement for the hardware, along with details of the capabilities and the software kit needed to develop apps for it. It is unlikely that Apple would want to launch this hardware at this moment to the public with a rich
customer experience. It’s likely that the software will be put into the hands of developers to get the work started. It is rumoured that a new MacBook Air powered by the M2 chip will be announced. These rumours have been around for a while. Chances are that it would be the only new hardware that would be announced. This could be the unveiling of a tweaked design, but it won’t be as significant as dedicating a big launch event in its own right.
How to watch the event?
The keynote at WWDC22 is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on June 6 and will feature a teaser of all the groundbreaking innovations planned by Apple. The keynote will be hosted by Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook. Cook will touch upon Apple’s new software platform updates. The WWDC will also feature other senior Apple executives and will be live-streamed for free. Unlike WWDC 2020 and
WWDC 2021, which was completely held online, Apple will hold a separate viewing for developers and students at Apple Park to watch the keynote and other presentations. At WWDC 2022, developers will have an opportunity to connect with designers and engineers through labs and digital lounges. Apple is likely to offer beta previews for developers to test the software ahead of its full release. Apple will be live streaming the keynote on www.apple.com, which is Apple’s official website. Viewers can also watch it on Apple’s YouTube channel or tune into the live stream through the latest versions of Firefox, Chrome, or Microsoft Edge. Users with an Apple TV, iPhone, or iPad can also watch the live stream of WWDC22 via Apple’s TV app, Apple TV+.
