Centuries later, it was purchased by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. He had the monastery dismantled stone-by-stone and packed into more than 11,000 crates and shipped to New York! The crates were then purchased by new owners more than a quarter-century later. They were persuaded of its worth as a tourist attraction.
